Description
In this chapter, we examine clinical encounters involving trained professional interpreters and untrained ad-hoc interpreters (e.g., a family member). The chapter offers perspectives on how remote interpretation platforms and telehealth affect healthcare interactions for minorized patients. We feature a case study to illustrate the consequences of miscommunication and the implications for what healthcare interpreters need to know about language to be effective with diverse patient populations. We also look at emerging professional opportunities and innovative training models for recruiting and preparing heritage language speakers for the healthcare professions.
